Each year Biobank Ireland supports the provision of Interns to the Biobank at St James Histopathology department for a period of ten months this provides positive benefits both to the biobank and the students in key areas of biobanking that can develop their career in this field. Over the last number of years we have partnered with DCU to source interns for the biobank.

Meaningful Projects and Responsibilities You’ll Tackle During Your Internship

This internship at Biobank Ireland Trust provides a hands-on experience in a dynamic environment where you’ll contribute meaningfully to cutting-edge research, public engagement, and operational excellence. The Histopathology Biobank and biorepository is a specialised pathology laboratory that facilitates future clinical research by collecting, processing, and storing biospecimens. These biospecimens, often obtained from surgeries alongside relevant healthcare data donated by patients, may be used in clinical studies both prospective and retrospective. Additionally, the Biobank manages the inclusion of diagnostic materials from the pathology archive in health research, ensuring the integrity of diagnostic material while advancing critical research initiatives.

Assisting with Data Collection and Analysis

Data collection and its administration are vital components of biobanking. The accurate storage and dissemination of samples promote effective research. As an intern, you’ll play an integral role in supporting this process, ensuring that data is managed meticulously to enable impactful health studies.

Supporting Research and Development Initiatives

The Histopathology Biobank supports both clinical and research studies. As an intern, you’ll contribute to these initiatives by assisting in the laboratory’s operations and aiding in research efforts, ensuring that biobank resources are effectively utilised to advance medical science.

Contributing to Public Outreach and Education

Biobank Ireland Trust is dedicated to increasing public awareness and professional understanding of biobanking. Throughout the year, we host events to engage and educate the public as well as health professionals. As an intern, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to this important work, helping to inform and inspire others about the value of biobanking in healthcare.

Managing and Organising Biobank Samples

As part of the biobank team, you’ll be deeply involved in the curation, retrieval, preparation, and release of samples and data for health research purposes. Your role will be critical in ensuring that the samples are handled accurately and efficiently to support groundbreaking studies.

Collaborating on Cross- Departmental Projects

The St. James’s Hospital Histopathology Biobank (SJHHB) operates in partnership with the Department of Histopathology and the LabMed Directorate. During your internship, you’ll collaborate across these departments, gaining insight into the integrated approach required for effective biobanking operations.

Assisting in Event Planning and Coordination

Events are an essential part of Biobank Ireland Trust’s mission to promote biobanking in Ireland. As an intern, you’ll assist with planning and coordinating these events, from public awareness campaigns to professional development seminars, ensuring their success and broad impact.
